Never rains – nor does it pour

The challenges this day are plentiful. Lookin’ for water. We are 3/4 full on the cisterns but there is no water in the lines. The creek is low and getting lower. We SHOULD have some water, tho, but at this end, there is none coming through. Might be a broken pipe but there is very little water in the creek anyway. And we (Sally, dogs, neighbours) walked the line yesterday and found no leaks.

And this is still JUST June. We can likely stretch our storage till the end of July (maybe) but July is rarely a wet month….we may just face a water crisis by then. Imagine that? The BC WET West coast going this long without rain. And forest fires becoming all-the-rage these days doesn’t help.

And the blog? The poor bloody blog. Hardly a comment in sight, hardly a reader getting counted on the stats sheet. Mind you, WdG wrote to ask if my blog is being blocked due to the previous one posted about Russia. Untidy even had to try twice. Maybe I have raised the ire of Russian/Trump AI bots…? But, I really doubt that. A blog with seven readers is no threat to anyone save for the now Hapless Seven.

A friend/partner’s health requires a 100 foot highline installed so that is the current most-pressing chore. Of course, I am cobbling most of it from left-over materials save for the cable and winch but it is still a chore. So that is something……you know, to keep idle hands busy. My welding skills are sub-par but things stay stuck together and that is what counts.

We had a nice week-of-whales last week. Orcas by the score. The odd Humpy. Very nice.

Some other chores getting done but we are still not on-schedule. Boat still uncared for. Life just keeps getting in the way. Dog hair keeps growing, too. Naps need taking. Dinner is always a priority. Not to forget the wine! And a few too many community commitments always seem to show up in summer.

Life is a crapshoot, eh? One more urban friend has just discovered rats in their walls and roof. That makes drought and highlines seem easy. The friends are less-than-happy about the situation. “I may just have to dynamite the whole place.”

“Dave? You upset?”

Nah. This really is just life. Things happen. Rats and dog hair happen. It’s really just the way it all goes. This is what the wine is for.

  1. It is just life and the stage we are all in! But at the end of the day when I sit on the deck and enjoy the quiet (except for birds and seals ) and the amazing view I think we are some of the lucky ones.

    • Agreed. We are lucky. In Texas (some places) are 119 F! People are actually dying!! Sheesh. Last night we had a cool breeze. Woke up to a temp of 15C/62F. But I would like a day or two of heavy rain.

  2. I thought I was going to be the first to add a stat to your count sheet, but got beat out by Master of Ceremonies Hart 🙂

The lack of rain this early is a tad concerning. Much different now than my early days on the coast. Maybe we’ll have to bring water by tanker from Ocean Falls, if they still have any there. Maybe we can get the permits from the province that Rain Coast Water Corp. tried to get for some 25 years before they sued the Crown and lost (on appeal).

Not sure about varying whale patterns. Orcas were plentiful here for years, now rare. Humpbacks, on the other hand, for some years a sight seldom seen, have become almost an infestation. Well, not quite. But they are a daily sight and can be seen some days for most hours of the day. Some nights they are around all night. It sounds like they are sleeping close to shore and they suffer from sleep apnea. One hears very loud gasping breaths at regular intervals. They can be heard even if windows facing the ocean are closed. But I am not complaining about being disturbed by whales. Nice having them around, although they are not always careful about coming up unannounced in front of one’s boat.

    • I hear that they do, in fact, have wine in Mendoza. Good steaks, too. Plus Argentina is relatively cheap. Yep, they have a lot goin’ for ’em.

  3. Yeah, the weather has been a bit weird.
    Sunny but cool.
    Black storm clouds…..and no rain.
    Summer has just started.

  4. Same here, no rain for 30 days in a row, then a few drops, now again straight 2 weeks without any rain. Lost 30 trees in my newly planted orchard. Replanted them last fall. Now lost again 30 yeras because of lack of rain. This is the second year in a row with so little rain in Belgium. And let these be the 2 years I started my orchard. So cider production might be a little lower than expected the coming years.
Never tried wine, but, because of the changing climate, there are already like 4000 acres of vinyards in Belgium, producing decent wines. Actually vineyards in France and Italy are suffering, because it is slowly becoming too hot to grow grapes
So maybe you and John won’thave to go to Mendoza, you might have similar climate soon in BC

  5. So re the weather, I just finished a hill walkabout. The trailing wild blackberry is very poor on the west side, also the salmon berries, the thimble berry and even the huckleberry. Instead of a 1/2 liter of mix I got 1 handful! Huckleberry is not much bigger than a bb and no sugar.
My herring ball is only a 10th or less of last years(they like schooling on the sheltered side of the boat. The murrlets are reducing them slowly, just two of these birds can keep a 20 ft puddle of herring confined. Its a amazing to see the herring jumping in mass to avoid the birds.
Not all bad as my school of pacific sand lance that show up in April/May to lay their eggs on my boat hull, well their offspring hatched last night. There is a 10 ft ball of them (about 5/8-3/4″ long) dashing away and back to safety in my 10 ft kelp fronds growing off the sides!
Always an upside to living OTG!
